Where science, story, and change come together.

Meet Dr Brin Hodgskiss
Dr Brin Hodgskiss spent 20 years driving change across the public sector before realising he had been doing it wrong.
Trained in narrative psychology, his career began with in-depth interviews of South Africa’s most notorious serial murderers research that earned him a PhD from the University of Pretoria in 2010. He then spent 15 years in policing across South Africa and the UK, supporting investigations into crimes ranging from burglary to terrorism, and later moving into operational leadership and large-scale transformation.
After leading change in three UK police forces, Brin joined the NHS in 2017 the largest public sector employer in Europe. It was there, under the immense pressure of public service delivery, that his perspective shifted: success wasn’t about managing processes or people, but meaning. He saw how the stories individuals told about themselves and their work shaped outcomes, just as with the offenders he once interviewed.
This insight led Brin to become a transformational story strategist, combining elements of true crime, psychology, and leadership to help people and organisations navigate change. He’s applied this across urgent care, primary care, and digital transformation, supporting pandemic responses and major reform efforts.
Since 2021, Brin has worked as a freelance consultant in the psychology of storytelling. He’s trained staff at the UK College of Policing, Cambridge University, the UK Parliament, and various executive coaching firms. In 2024, he co-authored Killer Stories: Conversations with South African Serial Murderers and launched the accompanying Killer Stories training programme.
